KRUSS Drop Shape Analyzer – DSA100 Expert

Drop Shape Analyzer (DSA100 Expert) analyzes drop shape for fully automatic, software-controlled contact angle measurements, surface and interfacial tension measurements, and surface free energy calculations. It has a built-in high-speed camera (sensor size 11×7 mm/1/1.2” CMOS) that can be controlled from the software via a USB 3.0. It can capture 150 fps at 1200×1200 pixels, 500 fps at 1200×350 pixels, 800 fps at 1200×200 pixels or 2000 fps at 1200×60 pixels. It has motorized x-y axis for precise control of droplet position. Its Single Direct Dosing System is software-controlled without tubing.

Tilting Base Assembly is also software-controlled and can rotate by 90° to measure advancing and receding contact angles as well as evaluation of roll off angle by tilting table method. Resolution of this method is 0.1° with a accuracy of +/-1°, minimum speed 0.1°/s, maximum speed 4.5°/s.

Software ADVANCE|DropShape-Contact Angle Module may be used to determine static and dynamic contact angles using sessile drop and bubble methods. Supported models for contact angle measurement are Conic Section, Polynom, Circle, Young-Laplace, Height Width methods with measuring range of 0-180° with a resolution of 0.1°.

Software ADVANCE|DropShape-Surface and Interfacial Tension Module may be used to determine surface and interfacial tension of liquids by analysis of pendant drop and rising drop. The software uses the Young-Laplace method, range is 0.01-2000 mN/m with a 0.01 mN/m resolution.

Software ADVANCE|Surface Free Energy Module may be used to determine surface free energy of solid from contact angle data. The surface free energy splits into its polar and dispersive components, its acid and base components as well as its hydrogen bonding components, according to different models. The software includes wetting envelope.

Our chamber is equipped with stainless steel vapor generator (4.5 gallon capacity), Alcatel Adixen 2010SD Vacuum Pump, high pressure transducers (MKS Instruments 728A13TGA2FB), low pressure transducer (MKS Instruments 925-11024), National Instruments data acquisition system (cDAQ-9174, NI 9212, NI 9205 Spring Terminal), flow meter (DMA15-AAAAA1 Picomag Flow Meter), and Variable AC Transformer with Digital Display.

Pool boiling experimental installation

Custom-made experimental setup for characterizing pool boiling heat transfer. The test sample is heated by cartridge heaters (McMaster-Carr 35025K131) inserted in copper blocks, powered by Kepco KLP 600-4 power supply. Temperature and heat flux is measured by thermocouples (Omega Engineering SCAXL-020U-6). Vapor is condensed by a reflux condenser (Quark Glass QC-6-4). The tempered glass chamber allows visualization of the bubble behavior.

Harrick Plasma Cleaner PDC-001-HP

The PDC-001-HP High Power Expanded Plasma Cleaner has a chamber that is 170 mm long and 150 mm in diameter. It uses Max RF power of 45W. It has 50% higher maximum power than the PDC-001 Expanded model. Just like the basic and expanded models, the High Power model can be used for nanoscale cleaning and surface activation. In addition, it can be used for etching of thin polymer films (10’s to 100’s nm thick), with an organic film removal rate of ~7 nm/min. The plasma cleaner has a basic oil-based vacuum pump (PDC-VPE) and thermocouple vacuum gauge assembly (vacuum gauge, digital meter).

The PRM1Z8 Motorized Precision Rotation Stage (Thorlabs) is a small, compact, DC servo motorized 360° rotation mount and stage that accepts Ø1″ optics and SM1-threaded components.
